Developing carbon footprint neutral technology platforms

Corvay Bioproducts GmbH – developing carbon footprint neutral technology platforms

Corvay Bioproducts was founded end 2018 in Halle, Saxony-Anhalt, close to the Middle German Chemistry Triangle, by Albrecht Läufer and Joachim Schulze. Both founders have each over 30 years of experience in the Biotech- and Engineering Industry in leading positions and an extensive national and international network to technology experts, researchers and potential customers likewise.

It is our mission to provide a holistic approach to biotechnological processes by developing carbon footprint neutral technology platforms using renewable feedstocks combined with best-in-class biotransformation processes, energy saving engineering solutions for innovative fermentation equipment and applying circular economy.

We believe in sustainability. Therefore, we strive to shape the future of bio-based building blocks for high-performance polymers, coatings, lubricants, adhesives and fine chemicals. We are rethinking the value chain starting from the end. This way we are creating value for our clients and partners by combining existing know-how to make BioEconomy your success story.

The DDDA-Technology Platform

In 2019 Corvay Bioproducts acquired Verdezynes, Inc. Dodecanedioic Acid-Technology Platform to biotechnologically produce long chain diacids from renewable feedstocks. This process leads to a 100% BIO-DDDA (DDDA = Do Decane Di Acid). The technology package contains an number of high yield production strains and patents as well as Standard-Operation-Procedures, laboratory notebooks and detailed documentation of test trials and upscaling campaigns. Based on these assets Corvay Bioproducts further improved the downstream and purification process to make it even more sustainable and reduce energy and OPEX costs by applying circular economy to valorize the existing side streams. An own patent application was filed.

Furthermore, the Product and Technology Pipeline of Corvav Bioproducts contains additional six promising targets with high synergetic potential. The most advanced project next to the DDDA-Platform is FerroShield, which is a registered Trademark of a proprietary formulation used as a corrosion inhibitor. Trials for toll production and application test in industry are complete and the product is ready to be launched. Other Projects are the development of several long-chain diacids, including an unsaturated DC18 product, directed strain evolution and innovative engineering solutions for more sustainable Fermentation Technologies.

Bio-adhesives made from vegetable oil as a practical example of a bioeconomic process

There are now examples of plastics made from biobased raw materials. However, the resulting products can only be truly sustainable if the adhesives, varnishes and foams used to produce these products are also made from biobased raw materials. This is something the Fraunhofer IMWS in Halle (Saale) is working on.

Up to now, adhesives have mostly been made of petroleum-based thermoset epoxy resins; however, vegetable oil-based epoxides can have similar material properties. They are based on vegetable oils, such as scorpion fish oil, which contain a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids. Combining these vegetable-oil epoxides with suitable curing agents produces highly durable plastics.

Because there can be a wide variation in the chemical composition of natural raw materials, suitable biogenic resins undergo detailed analysis at the Fraunhofer IMWS. The institute’s research activities range from identifying suitable ingredients, to functionalizing and developing suitable processing methods and upscaling these to industrial scale. Vegetable oil-based epoxides are now being used to develop novel adhesives that are 86 percent biobased.

Vegetable oil-based plastics can also be used in foams, for example to thermally insulate buildings. The Fraunhofer IMWS cooperates with partners from industry in developing finely-tuned compositions of epoxidized linseed oils and curing agents that have short curing times and low viscosities. The biogenic mass fraction is currently 80 percent. The functional material is lignin, a waste material from cellulose production, around 20 billion tons of which is generated annually.

So far there have been few attempts to use sustainable materials for adhesives, varnishes and foams. Our material concepts pave the way for this.

Leuna – The Dynamics of Chemistry

The Leuna Chemical Complex is synonymous with dynamic development, innovation and efficiency. Since the introduction of the market economy in the former East Germany in 1990, both international corporations and medium-sized companies have invested over 6 billion euros in the Leuna Chemical Complex. Today Leuna is one of the top addresses for modern chemistry in Europe.

Feedstock integration, energy integration, an efficient infrastructure and its strategically advantageous location at the heart of Europe are decisive factors in the location’s competitiveness and economic strength. This is exemplified in part by the circa 10,000 employees working in more than 100 companies producing 12 million metric tons of goods every year on the complex.

The chemical industry’s long tradition in the region ensures a close bond with the people who live and work here. Skilled workers and professionals, teaching and learning at the local technical colleges and universities are available to safeguard the innovativeness of the Companies on the complex.

Synergy Effects in Feedstock Integration

There is a very diverse range of products produced in Leuna reflecting the multilayered production profile of the complex. A highly flexible and efficient infrastructure permits traditional mass chemistry as well as specialty chemistry – this is increasingly becoming the focus of many companies. Integration with the refinery in Leuna and the supra-regional pipeline network ensures the advantageous supply of essential raw materials. Research institutions on site have flexible facilities ideal for the development of highly specialized products.

Companies on the complex benefit from a highly developed and complex feedstock integration that promotes synergy effects.

The systematic implementation of the chemical park concept, with InfraLeuna GmbH as the independent operator of the infrastructure safeguards the synergy effects of the Leuna Chemical Complex and secures a cost-effective and efficient production environment for the companies on-site.

InfraLeuna’ s comprehensive range of activities encompasses the provision of steam, electricity, fresh water and drinking water as well as wastewater disposal and other services. Complex logistic solutions are also offered. InfraLeuna is owned exclusively by on-site companies who operate their own plants on the complex. The focus at all times is on the business success of the customers as well as the future development of the complex as a whole.

The chemical park concept has proven to be a solid foundation for establishing a trusting and mutually beneficial cooperation between InfraLeuna and the chemical companies operating in Leuna – and has evolved into a role model for the restructuring of other chemical facilities in Germany and worldwide.

Martin-Luther university Halle-Wittenberg in general – Creating knowledge. Since 1502

Education and research with a 500-year-old tradition: Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) offers a wide range of academic subjects in the areas of humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and medicine. The oldest and largest university in Saxony-Anhalt was created in 1817 when the University of Wittenberg (founded in 1502) merged with Friedrichs University Halle (founded in 1694). Today the university has around 20,000 students and 340 professors.

MLU’s academic profile in the field of the humanities is shaped by the core research areas “Enlightenment – Religion – Knowledge” and “Society and Culture in Motion. Diffusion – Experiment – Institution”. The university’s core scientific research is in “Materials Science – Nanostructured Materials” and “Biosciences – Structures and Mechanisms of Biological Information Processing”. Agricultural sciences also play a leading role and Halle’s university bears sole responsibility in Saxony-Anhalt for developing this academic profile. The Faculty of Medicine focuses on epidemiology, health and nursing research and research on signal transmission.  Here nursing scientists conduct research on an equal footing with physicians. The Dorothea Erxleben Learning Centre is one of the largest teaching clinics for prospective medical professionals. In addition to its main academic focuses, the university offers a range of minor subjects, some of which are only offered in Germany at MLU.

As a member of the Central German University Alliance Halle-Jena-Leipzig, MLU cooperates closely with other universities, and with external research institutes and industries. This is visible at a local level on the Weinberg Campus, the second largest technology park in Eastern Germany. All of the university’s natural science institutes are concentrated here. They work in partnership with companies and major German research institutes, such as the Max Planck Society and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.  Halle’s university has a broad-reaching network of partner universities throughout the world.

In addition to the Weinberg Campus, MLU has three other main locations. The centrally located University Square is one of the most beautiful university squares in Europe and it is a site in Halle that is steeped in tradition. Many institutes focusing on the humanities and social sciences are located on the new Steintor Campus. Educationalists and theologians teach, study and conduct research at the Francke Foundations.

About Mercer Stendal

Mercer Stendal, a member of the Mercer International Group, is a manufacturer of bleached long-fiber pulp. In the paper industry, for example, this pulp is processed into fine papers and printing papers or high-grade hygienic papers. The pulp is also used as a reinforcing fiber in the reprocessing of waste paper, helping to close the recycling loop.

Mercer Stendal also operates Germany’s largest solid biomass power plant. The components of the wood that cannot be used to produce the pulp, such as non-utilizable bark and branches, vaporized cooking liquor and sewage sludge, are used to generate energy, i.e. they are incinerated, thereby generating energy from biomass.

The company generates 135 MW of electricity which enables it to meet all its own electricity needs and feed part of this renewable energy into the public power grid. By-products like tall oil and turpentine can be utilized by industry.
